I’ve always been interested why people live in the way they do, especially individuals that I aspire to be like, and people that live much different lives from me. I believe on some level everyone I can understand everyone.
In chemistry there is an idea about looking at atoms on a very small scale, for example their electron configuration, and then figuring out their material properties on a larger scale.
You can also see this idea in systems in general where you cannot escape the foundational patterns on which it’s based off. The entirety of computing is built on the boolean logic between TRUE and FALSE inside a very small transistor that can switch in nanoseconds. The complexity of the system will always come down to the weakest link which is probably the transistor technology, no other industry has grown faster than the semiconductor industry. This explains why technology and innovation which isn’t tied to computer science by definition is synonymous with tech.
I’ve been thinking about drawing a connection in reverse, instead of going up from human psychology, going down from societal norms. To be frank, I have read more about the societal norms, and it’s easier to observe than the human psychology, also there is a breath of literature by various different authors on society.
The thesis is that by looking at how a society functions as a whole, you can model how how a single human would think in reality.
We all want the best for ourselves, and genuinely make progress to certain goals and ambitions. I’m sure you’ve all said to yourself at one point “ I just need to lock in”. As in you need to start focusing for whatever the task at hand is, however you can’t. Our fickle minds pull us in different directions, before you know it, your hanging out with your friends rather than studying or working.
Now if you consider your being, as a collection of individuals. You notice that that every single part of you has also it’s hopes and desires as well, for example the runner in me would probably want to train for track, but there is also other people within myself.
Utilitarianism is most good for most people, and this is how we aim to live our lives, trying to be the best for most of people within yourself. This is fantastic if everyone is in agreeance, but most often than not there are internal disagreements and even power shifts between the people in the mind.
An idea in Utilitarianism is producing “ Most pleasure for most people”, this sounds great at a glance, but on deeper analysis, Utilitarianism would justify slavery. If we live in a purely Utilitarian society, there would be a select number of people that would have to be the slaves to the master class. In this way pure pleasure is optimized, there would be most pleasure for most people, but at the cost of misery for a fraction of the people. This is similar to how it used to be Pre-French revolution. Royalty, Bourgeois and the clergy would have a terrific life, but the working class were taxed heavily and forced to work long hours.
The suppressed working class organized a coup d’etat analogous to the rebels within yourself that cause an uproar and set your being into disarray. Therefore it is important to consider the various different people within yourself
