Spoken Word
It’s so exhausting for people to interpret what you mean when you say I’ll be there by 10:15. I know many people that will say this, and either cancel last minute or pull up at 10:30. I am not exempted from this, I try to be on time as much as possible. The real struggle is understanding what they mean when say a certain time, life is already hard in deciphering all the second meanings of things, the unsaid words that carry more weight that whatever the person is saying, and you can’t fully determine what they mean. In a world like this, People value when you can say something and fully mean it, and it’s okay to go back and apologize or say what you think now, but it’s important that you say what you mean. If someone says I’ll be there by 10:15, be there by 10:15, if you do don’t value your word, people are going to start to notice, and they’ll know whenever you say anything, it’s highly likely to be false. The worst part of this is that you’ll stop taking yourself seriously too, the way you treat other people, is the same way you treat yourself (for the most part). You’ll tell yourself I want to wake up at 6 AM , and wake up at 9 AM like you always do, and then deep inside you’ll know that you just like saying things rather than following through. This is extremely hard to do, I wanted to wake up at 7:00 AM today : ( , but I woke up at 9 AM instead. You are definitely going to fail, and you won’t be able to say what you mean 100% of the time, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, because the alternative is a disaster.
One way I’ve found of keeping accountability of when you are late, is apologizing to the people you held up in a meaningful way. Yesterday was the first time I was late to wrestling, highly unlikely that the coach even noticed it, but at the end of practice, I said sorry for being late. It’s kind of like a punishment for being late, and now that feeling wasn’t that great, I don’t want to be sorry for being late, I’d rather be on time.
